Waving Hello, and Let's Take a Poll

Hellooooooo!!

I haven't said much since dear Dave invited me here. In fact, this is my first "real" post.

Hello to everyone! It's so wonderful to have a community of writers. So maybe we'd better get about the business of "having a community."

Here's my idea (please hold your applause until the end):

Answer this post with the following information about yourself:

1. Name or Pen Name
2. Book writers: What is your genre?
3. Other writers: What are you pursuing? (e.g. short stories, magazine articles, etc.)
4. What is your current WIP?
5. What steps, if any, have you taken toward publication?
6. What do you need the MOST from this community?
7. What do you feel you have to OFFER?

I do hope everyone will participate! This blog has so much potential.

Guess I'd better go first!

1. Jillian Boehme (pen name for fiction works) My non-fiction book is published under my real name, which is Jill Schafer Boehme

2. Young adult fantasy

3. N/A

4. I am in the midst of my second YA fantasy novel

5. I used to be agented, but I fired my agent in August (long story). I began the tedious let's-find-a-new-agent process at that time, and still haven't landed one. The closest I got was 2 requests for partials. Currently, I've put queries for my first novel on hold so that I can focus on my WIP. If it turns out as well as I hope, I'm planning on changing gears and querying afresh with my new work.

6. Encouragement and we're-all-in-this-together-ness! And the occasional critique (obviously I haven't been brave enough to do that...yet!).

7. Humor, encouragement, and I will rip your grammar to shreds if you want me to. ;o)

Guess I better go second! :)

1. Dave Hanks. I haven't settled on my pen name as of yet. I will most likely go with David R. Hanks, or possibly D. R. Hanks.

2. Historical Fiction / mild Sci-Fi age 9-12 range.

3. Short stories for 9-12 year olds.

4. I have two. The first is historical fiction dealing with slavery, the second is more along the lines of sci-fi. Cool, wierd, and wonderful.

5. I have submitted one short story to two magazines. The first one rejected me, and I am still waiting to see on the second one.

6. SInce it was my idea, I figured that this community would offer a mixed level of talent. Those with greater experience could help out those who are struggling. Everyone would contribute in their own way. What I want to see most is everyone in the group become a better and hopefully published writer.

7. I have had some instruction in the children's literature arena, and have studied editing on my own. I have several guidelines to follow that I have gleaned from several sources that help to strengthen your writing. I have, in the past, put out tips of the week in this blog featuring some of those guidelines. I intend to continue that in the future.

As Jill said, Please participate. If everyone gets in here and does their thing, everyone can benefit. Post a short story, a chapter, ask a question, give a tip, don't be shy.

If you are having trouble wording something to your satisfaction, post it in here and let the group offer suggestions.

Happy Writing!

1. Name or Pen Name My Name is Winona Morris. If I ever do get published I'm not sure what I'll publish under. I'm leaning towards just Winona Leigh (my first and middle names)

2. Book writers: What is your genre?

I've never finished a novel, but every attempt at novel writing I've had has been in the young adult category.

3. Other writers: What are you pursuing? (e.g. short stories, magazine articles, etc.)

I maily write sort stories. I woudln't mind having some of my short fiction published in magazines. I can't write nonfiction at all.

4. What is your current WIP?

I'm not currently working on anythign serious, just flash fictions from writing prompts.

5. What steps, if any, have you taken toward publication?

I've submitted to a couple of magazines. I've had Highlights for Children ask to see more of my work, though they didn't buy what I had tried to sell.

Mainly I write for my online writing groups and for posting on the internet.

I've submitted to some online magazines, but none of them have bitten either, except for one.

I had a short fiction entitled "The Santa Man" published by the Wild Child Publishing e-zine, but they dont have archives so I dont have any proof. -smile-

6. What do you need the MOST from this community?

Feedback. I like to hear what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong.

7. What do you feel you have to OFFER?

I'm not sure what I have to offer. I don't critique others very well. I guess I can offer my opinions as a reader. (I read...a lot.)

1. My name is Cynthia Green. I sign most of my work, C. H. Green.
2. I write poetry, short stories, nonfiction essays, plays, and am trying my hand at my first novel, which will be mainstream suspense, I suppose. The genre thing confuses me as so much of what I write seems to blur the edges.
3. I have written a couple of nonfiction articles that I have submitted to magazines. No one has accepted any of them yet. But I only started submitting last October. I have submitted a few poems to literary magazines as well. I have written several short stories. I have only submitted one, and it was rejected by Glimmertrain. As you might guess, my aspirations are quite high. I only submit to what I feel is the upper echelon. So, maybe I'm doing myself a disservice.
4. My current work in progress is my attempt at novel writing. I am starting Chapter 6. This will most likely be a 40-50 thousand word piece. My chapters are averaging aroudn 2000 words.
5. I have begun scouting the market. I have not obtained an agent. I am not sure I need one. I have read mixed reviews concerning this.
6. I like the sense of belonging. This helps me to feel not so isolated in my quest.
7. Friendship, honesty, input, and humor.

Sorry I hadn't responded earlier to this. I missed the post.

1. My name is Lisa Braendle.

2. My novel genre is mainstream (mystical/suspense). My short stories vary from romance to mainstream.

3. I am pursuing all areas of writing. I've written a 70,000 word novel called, "On the run." It is very much in the revision process.

4. Also, I am also working on the basics of short story writing (genre varies from romance to children's) and am active in three writing groups other than this one.

5. I started writing to be published in Nov of 2004. In 2005, I had two genealogy articles published in Everton's Genealogical Helper. One of my health success stories was published in Today's Health & Wellness based out of MN. I have submitted a few misc. stories and anecdotes. None published to date.

I have three stories and two anecdotes to date that I am actively submitting. My novel needs much more work.

6. I need critique of current works and ideas as well as tips on the basics on writing.

7. I can help with critiques. I feel I have a good handle on helping others with an honest critique of their work because I have experience with other writing groups.

Additional note: I'm looking forward to seeing all of your work. I've posted a couple of things here already-feel free to offer feedback. Thanks!
